Three musicians at Haberdashers’ Monmouth Schools carried off the top prize in this year’s annual talent contest.

Students from the town’s three secondary schools – Monmouth Comprehensive School, Monmouth School for Boys, and Monmouth School for Girls – united on stage after progressing from the qualifying rounds for a special celebration of music.

The evening raised around £1,000 for Cancer Research Wales in memory of Monmouth School for Boys’ pupil Tom Walker, who died last year from leukaemia.

A team of sixth formers from Crayford Academy took part in the Final for the Annual Livery Academy Awards at Mansion House, home and office of the Lord Mayor. The team consisted of Year 13 students: Eleanor Dagnachew, Gideon Divine, Andrea Shittu, Henry McCarron, Ben Jones and Karis Stevens.

 

Having won the heat back in November, the team had further prepared their pitch with the help of mentors, Joshua Rosen and Doug Spencer from the business world and also Nick Jenkins, the founder of Moonpig and a loyal Haberdasher.

A team of Haberdashers attended Knights Academy early this term to speak to a group of Year 11 and 12 students.

‘The Fantastic Five’,  a phrase coined by Executive Principal, Dr. Tesca Bennett, spoke to a large group of Year 11 and 12 students.  The talks were really honest and inspiring, and students were engaged throughout.

A record number of boys from Newport and its surrounding areas will receive letters in the coming days recommending that they apply.

Haberdashers’ Adams has announced that from September 2019 nearly half of its intake is likely to be from pupils living within just a few miles of the school. When Headmaster Gary Hickey took over in 2015 one of his priorities was to take the school back to its roots. He discovered that just six of the 105 day boys who had started Year 7 that September were from the local Newport area.

Former Monmouth Head Boy Hallam Amos completed an excellent summer tour with Wales by scoring a fine try in a commanding 30-12 win against Argentina in Santa Fe.

He rounded off a superb second-half flowing move to dive over for his fifth try for Wales in his 18th Test appearance. Playing at full-back, Hallam gave another assured display for Warren Gatland’s side who secured their first Test series victory in Argentina since 1999.
