Background to The Haberdashers' Company


The Haberdashers' Company is one of the Twelve Great Livery Companies.  Over 500 years old, today it fulfils its charitable purpose primarily through its involvement with schools. 


The Company is trustee of four main grant-making foundations and four school foundations. The latter were established by members of the Company in the 16th and 17th centuries and now support, directly or indirectly, twenty schools in both the maintained and independent sectors. The charitable foundations own the land and buildings of some of the schools, providing income to them, and the Company also directly sponsors the associated Academies, providing or nominating the majority of governors for both Schools and Academies. There are about 12,000 pupils in all and nearly 1,400 staff.


Haberdashers’ Hall in West Smithfield provides a contemporary and modern home to the Company, affording the membership a highly desirable place to convene, both to carry out the work of the Company and for social events.  It is here that the Clerk and a relatively small team, which includes the Head of Charities and the Grants Administrator, are based. 



Job Description


The Head of Charities is part of a small, highly motivated and focused team which jointly executes the decisions and policies of the governing body, the Court of Assistants, and its committees. The post holder is Secretary to the Charities Committee, which has responsibility for the Company’s charitable activities. The post holder also acts as Secretary to all sub committees of the Charities Committee of which, at the moment, there is one: the Foundation Sub Committee.


The Head of Charities will lead, manage and advise on the Company’s grant-making to both charities and individuals, most of the latter being scholarships, bursaries and awards to pupils and former pupils of the Haberdasher Schools.


Reporting to the Clerk, the role involves:


  • Managing the Company’s four grant-making foundations and ensuring the available funds are used appropriately and effectively. This includes responsibility for preparing the budgets and the control of expenditure.

  • Conducting regular strategic reviews of the Company’s grant-making and other charitable activities and operational reviews of specific programmes as required.

  • Planning and preparing agendas for the Charities Committee, its sub committees and writing minutes for those meetings.

  • Assessing and evaluating applications received and making recommendations for funding to the Charities Committee. After grants are made, the Head of Charities is also responsible for ensuring compliance with grant conditions and evaluation of their impact.

  • Working with key people at the Company’s schools to ensure that the charitable support available to schools and pupils is well known and helping them access it.

  • With the help of members of the Company, maintaining close contact with the eight Church of England parishes of which it is Patron and fulfilling the Patron’s duties in respect of the appointment of new incumbents and maintaining an overview of the Company’s role as Patron to the William Jones’s Almshouse Charity.

  • The Head of Charities is required to make arrangements for a series of annual Company events and have significant input into others especially where the charity representatives or grant recipients are involved. Some evening attendance will be required as well as occasional overnight travel to schools and parishes.

  • Being required to manage communications regarding the Company’s charitable activities; this includes being responsible for the Charities edition of The Haberdasher magazine, the Charities section of the Company’s website and other related tasks.



Essential Requirements


  • The ability to identify charities that are working in areas the Company wishes to support, assess their effectiveness and evaluate the grants made.

  • Education to a high standard, preferably university degree or equivalent and ability to express his or herself clearly orally and in writing.

  • Ability to initiate and manage change.

  • Excellent administrative skills, a good knowledge of Word, Excel and other Microsoft Office product and experience with grants databases and grants audits.

  • Ability to develop and maintain good relationships at a variety of levels both within the Company and outside.

  • A good knowledge of the voluntary sector.

  • An understanding of fundraising.

  • Familiarity with the UK education system.

  • Experience of managing people.

  • Flexibility and being able to work as part of a small team.



Desirable Qualities


  • Sound financial skills, including the ability to assess accounts and to construct and control budgets.

  • Experience of managing events.

  • A working knowledge of the Church of England, its structures and procedures.

  • Experience of working in or with schools or other educational establishments.

  • A commitment to the voluntary sector either through employment or voluntary work.
