Jonty Lefroy Watt

Haberdashers' Adams

Jonty is a gifted musician whose love and talent of music was enjoyed by everyone during his years at Haberdashers’ Adams, particularly in House Music competitions. After completing his A-levels in 2018, Jonty studied music at Oxford and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in composition at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studies with Edmund Finnis.  Earlier this year Jonty was announced the winner of the Henfrey Prize for Composition 2021 - a competition open to students and recent graduates from the University of Oxford. Just four composers were selected to have their compositions performed in front of composer Judith Weir, Master of the Queen’s Music, and this year’s prize of £1,000 was awarded to Jonty.

Some of Jonty’s recent compositions include the use of free improvisation in ‘Alchemy’ for solo piano, graphic approaches to notation in ‘Self Portrait with Rain’, and a de-synchronised approach to structure in his ‘String Quartet’. Jonty says it’s not all lofty and intellectual though and believes that there is always a place in music for fun!
