Being a Mental Health Ambassador at Habs Abraham Darby

Being a mental health ambassador is one of the most meaningful roles I have taken on within my school community.

Mental health is an important part of everyone’s life, and being able to play a role in supporting younger students, especially those in Year 7 and Year 8, gives me a strong sense of pride and purpose. I know how challenging it can be to adjust to secondary school, and I want to help others feel supported, understood, and less alone.

As an ambassador, my role involves listening to students, encouraging them to speak about their feelings, and showing them that it is okay to ask for help. Sometimes it’s simply about being there to listen when someone feels stressed, and other times it is about signposting them to further support. I’ve learned that even the smallest conversations can make a big difference in someone’s day. Working with Year 7 and 8 students allows me to provide guidance at a stage when they are still finding their confidence and adjusting to new experiences. Being able to reassure them and help them see that they are not alone is something I find incredibly rewarding.

Although I cannot always make it to every session, when I do attend, I feel truly grateful for the opportunity. Each time I am present, I enjoy getting to connect with students and knowing that I am making a positive impact. It reminds me why I chose to become an ambassador in the first place—to give back to my community in a way that really matters. Even when I am busy and cannot attend, I always look forward to the next chance I get to be involved.

What I enjoy most about this role is the sense of connection it brings. Supporting my peers has taught me patience, empathy, and the value of listening without judgment. It has also shown me how important it is for young people to talk openly about their mental health, and I am proud to contribute to building a safer and more supportive environment in school.

In conclusion, being a mental health ambassador is more than just a role for me—it is a chance to give back to my community and help others through their challenges. Working with Year 7 and 8 students has been a meaningful experience, and even though I cannot always be there, when I am, I love every moment of it.
