Haberdashers’ Character: Livery Entrepreneurs’ Challenge

Haberdashers Futures is an important part of the Haberdashers’ Advantage programme, which focuses on broadening students knowledge about life after school and what their next steps might look like after leaving full time education.

March = #NationalCareersWeek

Skills such as leadership, entrepreneurship and team work are important life skills to learn in preparation for the world of business. So last week Year 12 students from across the Livery network of schools, stepped into the shoes of business leaders, competing to run a virtual company. We were delighted to be joined by students from the Merchant Taylors’ Company, the Leathersellers’ Company, the Skinners’ Company, the Mercers’ Company, and the Grocers’ Company and their respective schools.

The inaugural Livery Entrepreneurs’ Challenge is a collaboration between The Worshipful Company of Entrepreneurs, the Haberdashers’ Company’, and Enterprise Skills Ltd, designed to test a young person’s critical thinking, decision-making, and essential career skills in a high-stakes, real-world simulation.

Alongside students from other schools, they competed in challenges that tested their entrepreneurial thinking across key business metrics. The teams faced the tough task of running a mobile phone company and making strategic decisions on pricing, customer satisfaction, marketing and employee well-being.

Students had the opportunity to learn networking skills and be inspired by entrepreneurial leaders such as Rick Lowe and Rakhitha D., who shared their journey and insights.

Education

Ultimately, we did well because everyone in the team worked collaboratively and efficiently leading to success. Everyone was set a delegated role and everyone did their role efficiently meaning no aspect was left neglected leading to overall success.

Nikhil, Team Player and Haberdashers' Elstree student

It was fantastic to see the students not only absorb knowledge but also make key decisions on the spot:

  • 94.9% agreed or strongly agreed that the event ‘improved my understanding of the knowledge and skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur’
  • 84.7% agreed or strongly agreed that the event ‘made me feel more connected to the livery company which supports my school’
  • 89.7% agreed or strongly agreed that the event ‘improved my ability to make business decisions, think critically and challenge assumptions’

Huge congratulations to the winning team – Team Haberdashers, which included students from Haberdashers’ Borough Academy and Haberdashers’ Elstree Schools.
