The object of The Haberdashers’ Aske’s Charity (“the Charity”) is ‘to promote in Greater London and the neighbourhood thereof the education, including social and physical training, of boys and girls and in particular but without prejudice to the generality of the foregoing to conduct and maintain schools in or near to Greater London for boys and girls.’
The main activities of the Charity in pursuit of this charitable object are currently the operation of two independent schools at Elstree in North London and the support, by the provision of charitable funding, of a multi-academy trust in South London.
Through its activities, the Charity is involved in educating around 9,000 pupils at independent and maintained schools in Greater London.
The schools managed or supported by the Charity are part of a diverse family of Haberdashers’ UK schools. This family has the Haberdashers’ Company at its hub, with its member schools sustaining and enhancing the Haberdashers’ reputation for excellence in education.
The two independent schools at Elstree are Haberdashers’ Boys’ School and Haberdashers’ Girls’ School and are together known as “the Haberdashers’ Elstree Schools” or “the Elstree Schools”. These schools are operated by the Charity.
The multi-academy trust in South East London is constituted separately as the Haberdashers’ Aske’s Federation Trust and trades as Haberdashers’ Academies Trust South (“HATS”). The Haberdashers’ Company is the sponsor of HATS, and the Charity provides HATS with charitable grants, funded by the investment fund held within the Charity’s permanent endowment. The Haberdashers’ Company also provides HATS with governance support.
The Trustees have considered the Charity Commission’s general guidance on public benefit and more specific guidance for charities whose aims include advancement of education and whose activities involve charging school fees, in reviewing the aims and objectives for the Charity.
