Passing it forward: My Journey with Lewisham Youth Theatre

Philanthropy NEWS

The older I get, the more the phrase “pass it forward” resonates — particularly when it comes to supporting young people as they navigate those formative steps into adulthood.

I still remember my own teenage years at Haberdashers’ Hatcham College (more years ago than I care to admit), wishing I had more confidence, struggling to imagine making “grown-up” decisions, and hoping someone a little older and wiser might offer a nudge in the right direction. Fast forward to today, and the world young people are stepping into feels even more complex. So when I came across Lewisham Youth Theatre (LYT) at the Charities Engagement Evening hosted at the Company’s Hall last year, one thought struck me: “I wish I’d known about something like this when I was younger.”

Indeed, the event brought together charities with Haberdasher members seeking meaningful ways to give back. LYT immediately stood out for me — not just because of its mission, but because I could see how much it empowered young people for life, through theatre. Regardless of whether they pursue the arts professionally, the experience provided a launchpad to a confident voice, nurturing teamwork – aka life skills that will serve them far beyond this stage.
Now, despite my professional background in finance, I’ve always held a deep appreciation for the arts — a love sparked from school days & long afternoons spent in the music and art rooms at Habs Hatcham. So, when the opportunity came along to become Treasurer at LYT at the Charities Engagement evening, it felt like a natural fit. Combining the strategic oversight I could offer in a youth-focussed charity with a tangible opportunity to have real community – all through a dedicated safe space and creative outlet for young people who might not otherwise have access to one.

From the outset, the application and onboarding process was welcoming and transparent, reaffirming my decision to get involved. It was clear that LYT takes its governance seriously, and that they value not just passion, but professional commitment. I knew I could contribute meaningfully — not just in managing financial reporting or budgets, but in supporting the charity’s long-term sustainability.

Since joining, the experience has been incredibly rewarding. I’ve been privileged to work alongside a deeply committed team of staff, trustees and fellow Board members — demonstrated by how they give their time quietly but generously.

LYT’s young members, aged 8 to 18, are the heartbeat of the organisation. Most importantly, they are given agency to direct, produce, act, lead front of house, work backstage — with trust & responsibility, and full confidence in their abilities.

Being Treasurer at Lewisham Youth Theatre has given me a renewed appreciation for the role of the arts in moulding young lives — not just creatively, but socially and psychologically break boundaries for what they can achieve. It’s also reinforced how crucial good governance is in allowing small charities to grow and thrive.

I look forward to continuing this journey — and wherever I can, I’ll do my best to pass it forward.
