Engaging the next generation of Haberdasher lawyers

Temi, is an Apprentice Haberdasher, as well as an alumna at Haberdashers’ Girls’ School Elstree, which she attended as Head Girl during the 2020–21 academic year. She is now a trainee solicitor, completing her first seat in commercial real estate.

This Black History Month, she shares with us in her own words, why giving back and inspiring the next generation of Habs lawyers is so important to her.

“My time at Habs played a pivotal role in shaping the person I am, particularly the opportunities presented to me by the Company more broadly, to network with like-minded peers, and those whose careers I aspired to emulate.

One experience that stands out is from Year 12, when, through the Monmouth Enterprise initiative, I had the chance to spend a work experience day at an international law firm. That exposure was invaluable, confirmed my interest in pursuing law and gave me a first glimpse into what a career in the legal field could look like.

It was therefore a real pleasure, and a no brainer, to return the favour this past June by taking part in one of the Habs Advantage Networking Law Lunches. This event immediately caught my attention because it combined two things I’m truly passionate about: mentorship and law! Having recently begun my own professional legal journey; I know firsthand how overwhelming it can feel for students as they try to decide on their next steps. The networking lunch offered a brilliant opportunity to connect with current students who are only a few years behind me, answer their questions, and share what I’ve learned so far about navigating the early stages of a legal career.

The lunch was a great experience, where students were able to ask even the smallest of questions in a relaxed environment. Indeed, not only was it an opportunity to give back and support the next generation of aspiring lawyers, but also a chance for me to gain some professional networking experience of my own.

This is just one example of the incredible network that Habs fosters, and I would encourage everyone to get involved in the Habs Advantage programme however they can -whether that be as a mentor or mentee. I look forward to engaging more with young Haberdashers and helping young aspiring lawyers in any way I am able.”
