A wonderful deputation to Bunbury

Each of the Haberdasher churches is visited once every four years – and last week was the turn of our church in Bunbury, in the heart of the Cheshire countryside.

The deputation started with a joyful celebration of learning by the pupils of Thomas Aldersey school, a school with a long-standing connection to the Company (a portrait of Thomas Aldersey is in both the Livery Hall and Court Room). The pupils proudly wear the Haberdashers’ crest on their uniform.

As part of the service the Prime Warden was gifted the ‘traditional’ gifts of port and a tin of anchovies (presumably to fortify her on her long journey back to the Hall) by the head pupils.

Each year group had prepared a special presentation: a song, a poem, a reflection on their learning about Katherine Johnson (NASA’s ‘human computer’) and Sir David Attenborough. Their school motto was a thread that weaved through all recitals: Let your light shine.

The deputation then heard about the work and mission of the church: worship, pastoral care and community outreach.

The worship ranges from the traditional and well-loved Book of Common Prayer service, to the Forest Church service held monthly outside the church.
There are pastoral care projects that seek to address loneliness, bereavement and men’s ministry.

Plus, a community art exhibition, youth work and church/community magazine all help draw people in to the church.

Thanks to the Haberdasher members who joined us for the visit, and for the Bunbury school and church community for making us so welcome. See you in four years!

The next church deputation is on Wednesday 30 September to All Saints, New Cross (round the corner from Haberdashers’ Hatcham Primary). Email jasmine@haberdashers.co.uk if you would like to attend.
