Getting stuck in at BRITE Box

The Haberdashers’ Advantage: Added Value

Each year a members of the Haberdashers’ Company are invited to come and spend time supporting our charity partner, BRITE Box.

Alongside the grant-making that the Company provides, the volunteer involvement of our members enables our partnership with them to elevate their work for greater impact with their communities.

Haberdashers are keen to get to know our charities, to understand their needs, and to offer their time and talent in support of their work.

This support ranges from one off-volunteering, such as driving a delivery van, to longer term involvement including Trustee and Treasurer roles with our charities.

Each year a group of Haberdasher members spend time at our charity partner BRITE Box in Bermondsey, South East London, helping to pack their meal recipe kits that are provided to local schools in the area.

What is BRITE Box?

It is a weekly activity that includes a meal recipe kit with all ingredients provided. This enables families to prepare and eat a different balanced meal together each week. It is bringing families together around food in the home sparking joy and interest in cooking & healthier eating. It provides children (and adults!) with key cooking skills and the self-confidence to use them.

How does it work?

The boxes are packed and distributed from the South London Mission to your schools on the Friday afternoons. to be received before school pick up.

The boxes are smaller than the breakfast boxes, therefore easy to carry and contain enough food to prepare a meal for a family of five.

Each school will receive boxes for one year group and the project can be linked to learning outcomes as a means of de-stigmatising the receipt of food for a family.

BRITE Box also encourages parent participation within learning at home and at the end of the project the class could come up with a menu for BRITE Box to use in the future.

Peter Baffoe, Executive Director of South London Mission and his wife, Winnie Baffoe, Director of Engagement and Influence, work in partnership with all strands of community to bring about holistic change.

Their Theory of Change is based on three core values that each of our projects should aim to address in order to bring about systemic, long-term change in individuals, families, communities and society as a whole.

These values are ‘RESPITE, REGENERATION and REVOLUTION’.

Both Peter and Winnie have recently become members of the Freedom of the Haberdashers’ Company.
