Haberdashers’ Advantage: Futures

Inspiring Haberdasher students

Our aspiration is to empower young people from every background to fulfil their potential. Here’s how the Haberdashers’ Futures programme supports that ambition.

The Futures programme is intended to increase awareness of different career paths, build confidence and enable students and alumni to access the broader Haberdashers’ community as they move into the wider world.

One of the key principles of our work with schools is that we should focus on areas where we have a special ability to add value. Nowhere is this more relevant than in our work on careers and employability. The Company is extremely well placed to offer insights into business and the professions and help students to identify their direction in life. Young people need to learn about professional networking and this is an important aspect of our Careers Conferences.

Another cornerstone of the Futures programme is Habs Aspire – our dedicated, online, careers mentoring programme for Sixth Formers.

This shared programme is a resource that is being made available to all of our 2,000 Sixth Form students across our four school hubs.

HABERDASHERS' FUTURES

Habs Aspire

Our dynamic mentoring programme for Haberdashers’ sixth formers connects them with professionals from our extensive membership and community networks.

Habs Aspire aims to build confidence, increase awareness of different career paths, and give students practical advice and support as they move into the wider world. Together, we can equip the next generation to succeed.

Each year the flagship careers conferences bring together Year 12 students from each Haberdasher secondary school to gain insights into an employment sector, learn how to be successful when making applications and develop employability skills. Across two days students take part in a networking reception and dinner, hear keynote speeches from industry leaders and take part in practical, interactive workshops. We seek to respond to the emerging interests of students, drawing on Year 11 survey data to set future sectors of focus. Earlier events have highlighted careers in medicine, law and real estate as well as exploring apprenticeship pathways across three sectors: digital, engineering and finance.

Other activities within Futures include a termly collaboration with the Central Criminal Court to deliver days focussed on careers in law and business simulation competitions run in partnership with the Entrepreneurs’ Company. Students also develop a business start-up idea and compete annually for the Livery Academy Awards, culminating in a final hosted at Mansion House where the winning Haberdasher team competes against other livery companies.

Haberdashers' futures

I enjoyed so much the helpful nature of everyone in the Haberdashers' Community and the fact that questions are so genuinely encouraged. Making contacts with the industry professionals was of course a main highlight and I will take action by contacting those individuals for work experience.
